NUKE (PROJECT BALLOON)

This is the main project for VFX fundamentals that was in collaboration with Maya as well as nuke. In this project we had to take all the things that were taught in previous lectures from Maya and nuke and blend it together.

The project was started by creating a hot air balloon in maya. It had all these various content such as the balloon which had creases on it. Creases Are basically the edges that are well defined and hard edges. Along with the balloon, the other contents that were in the model was basket, cylinders, pipes and stands, knots of rope which was basically hard to create as new nodes like bend shape node and lattice were a bit difficult to learn on the first try. After the modelling of the balloon and giving it proper texture it was given a bit of animation, rendered it in Arnold and it was good to go to the further process that would be in the software of Nuke.

After Maya the further process was to be carried out in Nuke. This was the project where we have to bring our imaginations in and do the editing of the video provided to us. This video is the main plate and the next process came into place. The first step that I personally did was roto the mountain out of the plate as I wanted to add a secondary sky behind. I rooted the front mountain and the back Mountain differently because both of the mountain have different moment , causing the roto to be a bit shaky. Tracking the mountain helped me in assembling the roto to the Mountain precisely. After rotoing the mountain, I tracked and roto the sky and replaced it with another image of the sky. The next part was the most important part of editing the video that was colour correcting the plate according to the colour of the sky which emits the light. After that I added the balloons to this video, colour corrected it and finished it bye adding the defocus node to the balloons depending upon how far they are. In addition I also add an extra animated birds, colour keyed the green screen and added it to the plate. And this was the final result:

Color Keyed the Brids and applied transformation

WEEK 11 NUKE: MATCHMOVE

This week we started to learn about match move.
To begin with, we started by undistorting the video, which helps in taking out the curvy look created due to the camera lens.
After making the video undistorted, we use match move process and redistort the video all over again.
If we do not have the checkerboard for undistorting, we have to create these grids manually by hand.

Getting back to tracking, before do it the plate needs to be denoised, and graded as per needed in order to get a proper visuals for the desired track.

While tracking we did get errors which were calculated to around 0.91, as it was below 1 and the errors were not in an important position we rejected the errors and updated it to remove the errors.

These tracks could be seen in 3D viewer itself,
Where we allotted it a ground plane by selecting respective track points. These 3D Tracking points also helped us to set 3D geometry to them.

For 3D visualisation we started by taking Cube and with the help of SCANLINE RENDER and camera we were able to have a 3D visualisation of it.
Our main motive of this was to get familiar to 3D structure in Nuke software. Surprisingly, the 3D is Nuke is also good. It feels as if it was a 3D software to begin with.

With the help of ReadGeo node we can also import 3D objects from other softwares. And Scene node helps in merging 1 or more 3D objects together.

WEEK 11 MAYA: FX (ANIMATION AND BULLET DYNAMICS)

This week our main motive is to create stairs and adding falling balls to it. We started by duplicating special the boxes in a way it creates stairs. We added 0,1,-1 in order to get the axis right and added 10 units to it.

Then we started animating the ball manually.

The result was added with the help of graph editor and manually changing its position. Along with this we broke the tangents and manipulated the tangents to create a smooth transition. There were 2 balls: Ball A and Ball B, both having different characteristics.

Ball A was bouncy and Ball be had a weight and thats why it was less bouncy comparatively.

While animating the 2 ball we added weight to the broken tangents so that we can manipulate the curve individually to obtain a falling effect.

After the animation we started rendering.

Firstly we added the HDRI image to the arnold skydome light. Later on the base was added with the arnold shadow matte to get shadows on to the floor itself.

On the same day we started to learn a new concept in MAYA i.e. FX

We started it by learning more about Bullet And its various tools.

We started by knowing more about rigid bodies

  1. Active rigid body
  2. Passive rigid body

It started with learning more about collusion in between these rigid bodies. And with the help of this we started to collide more objects such as spheres and boxes that resembles dominoes.

Along with this we also learned about bullet Constraints, specifically Hinge, which acts like a point where an active object can be settled upon.

WEEK 9: NUKE

This week mainly focused on cleaning in nuke. removing elements that are unwanted is a very important step in the movie industry. though it’s challenging it’s also very essential. Cleaning up the scene is obtained by taking all the previous lectures into consideration. For this video I have cleaned up a paper on the brown board. It was obtained with the help of paint tool which helps me in cloning the colour surrounding it. With the addition of track the paint was stuck to the point on the board for the entire video.

Along with the cleanup I have also added a ground break to the plate. This ground break was created by me in the past in the software of Houdini. It specifically was created for a green screen project. Basically the ground had various constraints such as glue, active region etc. and with the help of external forces it breaks into pieces. I’ve given the groundbreaking a green texture which could be keyed in any software.

this helped me in achieving the shown result.

WEEK 8: NUKE (Planar Tracking)

Final Result

Addition of the poster with the help of planer tracker and roto
Addition of the poster with the help of planer tracker and roto

The task this week was to change the advertisement on the given video.

To obtain the result I have used planer tracker, which helps in tracking a particular plane or a surface and give a 3-D visualisation or a four point play in two us. The difficult part of planner tracking is that it gets messed up if the point given collides or disappear at a given frame. To solve this problem what I did was I change the reference frame to where the points are clearly visible. After the track is done I have taken the corner pin absolute node in order to get the exact transformation of the track that was taken.

This corner pin track was added to the two advertisement which I transformed colour graded as per needed to match the given plate. After this I pray multiplied it so that I can get the alpha of the images on the advertisement that I wanted to be there. After this step I rotoed the pole and merged it along with the main plate so that it is on the top of the advertisement as I wanted to be.

Week 6: Nuke Development

In this week, Color grading and correction along with the concept of premultiplying and un-premultiplying was taught. Were the assignment for the same was color grading the images of and trying to blend the air plane as much as we can with the background sky.

The second assignment for the same week was color grading a RAW image while using rotoscoping as well as grade and color correction.

Week 4 and 5: Roto-Scoping (NUKE)

The goal for these weeks was to learn the proper traditional way of rotoscoping in softwares. This was a really fun week as we were getting started with Nuke and its various nodes. Rotoscoping was really a long process and alot of times you have to roto for each frames resulting in your time. Tracking the footage also helps in attaching the rotos to the footage.

For week 4 we came across the basic of Roto-scoping in Nuke. We were introduces to the ways in which various rotos can be achieved and how flexible the tools of the Roto node is. Along with roto node we were also introduces to nodes such as Matte-check, filter erode.

In the week 5 we came across the node tracking in NUKE. It was really convenient on how we can connect few of the rotos to the tracks and not going through the trouble of moving it each and every frame. Tracking really helps by taking tons of load various time. But at times the tracking point gets disappear so we have to be careful while checking our tracking point as it might cause errors while adding rotos to it.

Week 2: Nuke Development

The assignment for this week for vfx was to upload a video that would show how you view the city. Ever since in London, I have always loved the innumerable ways how the Sky is represented itself to us naturally. It is always a beauty to look a these beautiful skies, which catches my heart in awe.
